Weekly Photo Challenge: Abandoned

Fort Rotterdam was a fort built in 1545 by the King of Gowa Kingdom. It’s standing majestically at the western coast of Makassar, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. This Fort has silently witnessed many episodes in Makassar’s history, playing a most essential role in its development.

It was originally known as Fort Ujung Pandang, used as the frogmen headquarters of the Kingdom of Gowa, then seized by the Dutch in the 1670s. At the time of the Dutch occupied the fort, the name was changed to Fort Rotterdam. The name was chosen by Cornelis Speelman, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1681 to 1684. He deliberately chose the name Fort Rotterdam in memory of his homeland in the Netherlands. The fort was later used by the Dutch as the central storage of spices in eastern Indonesia. It was also used as a Japanese prisoner of war camp in World War II.

I fell in love with this fort when I was traveling there. All the buildings looks so beautiful with European style.  Most of the fort buildings still intact and be one of the attractions in the city of Makassar. Some of the building is used as a museum in which there are numerous references to the historical greatness of Makassar (Kingdom of Gowa-Tallo) and other areas in South Sulawesi.

Address: Komplek Benteng Ujung Pandang, Jl. Ujung Pandang No.1, Makassar

    • Ah, You praise me a lot and I’m blushed. Thank you so much. You such a sweet heart.
I know that english is international laguange, so I challenged myself to write in english. It’s hard, I keep trying. 🙂

      • You’d NEVER know you aren’t a native English speaker…seriously, you’ve gotten a great grasp of a very complex language. My grandparents emigrated here from Italy and never really got very good at it–despite living here longer than they did in Genoa!
